It has been two years since Gatsby died and Nick describes that day as full of "...police and photographers and newspaper men..." after that there were many newspaper articles about what they thought had happened, but most of them told false or untrue stories. Nick found himself responsible for Gatsby because no one else was "interested" in helping and also because Gatsby had no one who really cared for him. He tried to contact Daisy in hopes that she cared and would help him, but she left town with Tom and her daughter and there were no signs of them anywhere. He tried to contact Meyer Wolfsheim and he too did not seem at all interested in Gatsby's death. After the third day Gatsby's father came to attend his sons funeral. He told Nick about how Gatsby was as a child and how he was always so ambitious. Later that day somebody called and Nick told him that he should come to Gatsby's funeral, but he just wanted to get his tennis shoes. This just comes to show how people don't care about you when you are in the trenches and how they pretend to care when you are doing good in life. During his funeral nobody really showed up except for the man that Nick was in Gatsby's library three months ago.Nick planned to go back to the midwest so he talked to Jordan to clear up things. One October he saw Tom and he asked him what he told Wilson that day and Tom told him that he had told Wilson that Gatsby had owned the car and that Gatsby had deserved what happened to him. After a couple of days later Nick went back home. At the end of the book it says "So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past ''.
